Choosing Poverty and an Off-Grid Life
In a recent interview with The Daily Mail (as reported by PEOPLE), Hall explained that he and his wife are raising their five children off the grid in rural Arkansas.
He shared that he has taken a vow of poverty and plans to live independently using a hydro-electrical dam, along with custom plumbing and electrical systems, to remain disconnected from modern infrastructure.
Born Brandon Barnett, Hall also referred to himself as a “medieval moralist,” a phrase he uses to describe his deeply traditional worldview and rejection of modern consumer culture.
The Arrest That Changed Everything
Hall revealed that his decision to leave Hollywood was strongly influenced by his arrest in Texas in June 2020. According to Entertainment Weekly, police in Weatherford responded to an emergency call around 8:20 p.m. on June 20, 2020, reporting someone allegedly inhaling air duster near a dumpster along Fort Worth Highway.
An officer was dispatched, and Hall was taken into custody and booked at Parker County Jail. He faced charges related to possession for the purpose of inhaling or ingesting a volatile chemical. His bond was set at $1,500, which he posted the next day. At the time, a representative stated that the charges were being dropped, though Hall did not issue a formal public statement.
Sobriety, Relapse, and Disillusionment With Hollywood
In his interview, Hall said the arrest occurred after 15 years of sobriety, although he acknowledged experiencing several relapses that he felt were ignored in Hollywood’s “high-energy” environment. He described the arrest as a wake-up call that forced him to confront the kind of life he was living.
He explained that he no longer wanted a life built around manipulation—whether through his interactions with others, the content he created, or his own struggles with addiction. Hall added that he had no interest in continuing a career that he felt existed mainly to entertain or distract people without deeper meaning.
Donating Everything and Walking Away
Hall previously discussed his unconventional transformation in a YouTube video posted in April 2025. In that video, he revealed that he had donated all of his savings and most of his personal belongings, describing what remained as “a big pile of nothing.”
Despite the drastic change, Hall emphasized that leaving Hollywood was not about hating his craft. He said he genuinely loved filmmaking, television, and storytelling, and that his passion for the work itself never faded. Instead, the decision came from a deeper moral and spiritual conviction.

Reflecting on his lifestyle today, Hall said that giving up his possessions did not feel like a major sacrifice compared to what he believes God has given him in return. He described the outcome as “the fruits of that decision to live this radical lifestyle,” suggesting that spiritual fulfillment has replaced material success in his life.
